  • Batam is one of the 3,000 islands of Riau archipelago and is the nearest Indonesian island to Singapore.
  • In an area of 415 sq km, Batam enjoys an untouched natural beauty and is the ideal tropical island getaway.
  • The Riau Islands along with Temasek (now Singapore) was ruled by the Sultan of Johore, now one of the 13 states within Malaysia. It was later divided with all territory south of Singapore ceded to the Dutch. The Riau people later fought for independence and after the World War II, the Riau Islands was returned to Indonesia.
  • Batam is warm all year round with the highest rainfall recorded from November to January.
  • It has more than 800,000 people. Fishing used to be the traditional livelihood but now people are working in the manufacturing sector thanks to industrialisation.
  • Bahasa Indonesia is the official language and the common language used by a large number of the Riau population. English is the second most common language.
  • To get to Batam, you can take a plane or a ferry
